In today’s episode we are chatting with Matty Johns. To a lot of people, Matty is a footy loving larrikin. To me, he is a great mate that I can always rely on to have a good time with. Matty has played rugby league in the NRL, the state or origin, for the country and for the super league. His second career has been in entertainment and some people say it’s where he absolutely shines. In this chat we speak about Matty’s family and growing up in the Hunter. We speak about him playing with his brother Andrew Johns and how their relationship affected their careers. He travelled the world for work in poverty alleviation and emergency relief as he led World Vision in Australia for thirteen years. Tim was the Chief Executive Officer and Chief Advocate of World Vision Australia. He has authored a number of books on faith and life. In 2014 Tim was elected as one of Australia's 100 national living treasures. He was named in the Australian of the Year awards in 2006 and was made an Officer of the Order of Australia in 2005. Being a leader didn’t necessarily come naturally to Tim but his take on what it is to be a leader is refreshing. In 1995, Ian became the first high-profile Australian sports person and first rugby footballer in the world to come out to the public as gay. As a result of it, Ian has faced a lot of hurdles in his life that most of us wouldn’t ever have to consider. In this chat we talk about how Ian’s sexuality at the time that he came out shaped a lot of his life’s experiences. Times were pretty different 30 years ago, and we talk about how far we have come in the way of acceptance of LGBTIQ+ people, but also how much further we have to go. Ian shares a truly heartbreaking story of what led him to moving to Townsville and joining the Cowboys. We speak about the super league and him playing over in England, who his favourite coaches and rivals were and his brain injuries that he has acquired as a result of the game. We also speak about Ian’s dyslexia, and how he learnt to read and write in his thirties, his passion for the arts and his life now acting.
