Is Suffering Really Optional?; Practices of a Bodhisattva #35

Addicts are seekers. What do we seek? Transcendence. The mystical. The sacred. Why do we seek the type of experiences that are outside what we call ordinary consciousness? Rather than look for answers out of pure scientific curiosity, we're more likely seeking a way out of suffering, albeit in addictive ways. Yet, when we turn to twelve step programs for refuge, we're often told that suffering is optional. It's a popular meme, but is there any truth to it? Join me this week as we meditate, analyze and discuss this notion from the perspective of Buddhists in recovery, or whatever kind of seeker you may be.
