When The Dakota was built in New York City in 1880 it was an oddity. Built with no expense spared, it was beautiful and futuristic - capable of powering itself and all it's surrounding streets with it's own basement power station - yet so far away from downtown Manhattan that it was named The Dakota because it might as well have been the midwest.
