Boy oh boy did episode 568 break the internet! We know that the media’s clickbait approach to health can be confusing, but what about when you see your health practitioner and you leave your appointment feeling confused and like you are just a number in the system? A long term health aware listener left a recent appointment with an integrative GP feeling exactly that way with regards to recent blood results concerning her good and bad cholesterol particles. Be prepared to have your mind blown as Damo helps us navigate cholesterol – how we absorb a fraction of cholesterol from what we eat, how our body makes cholesterol and how the liver manufactures cholesterol as a result of physical, emotional and mental stimulus and triggers that it receives from our nervous system. You’ll walk away from this week’s episode stressing less about the steak, aka cholesterol bomb, you had for last night’s dinner and focusing on adding in more happiness, laughter, fun, movement and sunshine so that we can manufacture our good cholesterol. Do you want more focus on fun, happiness and sunshine? Join us for this and more when we are in Ikaria August 22-31 and Sardinia September 1-10. Following on from episode 568, Marcus shared a recent clip from Dan Buettner who believes the first step in getting healthier and increasing your longevity is to eat at home. There is no denying that there are numerous benefits to getting back into the kitchen, but have we now gone from food scare to eating out scare? Will eating out make you die sooner? What about the connection and socialisation which can be achieved through sharing a meal out with family and friends, laughing and having a conversation? Isn’t the value of a meal maximized by sharing it with someone else? Join us as Damo and Marcus bring common sense to the conversation and share their top three tips for eating out and doing it well. Do you want to eat out with us in Ikaria and Sardinia? We are in Ikaria August 22-31 and Sardinia September 1-10. Now more than ever, there is a litany of conflicting views when it comes to health, in particular what to put on your plate. Will that skinless chicken breast I ate for lunch give me diabetes? Will I become an addict if I eat animal protein? Can I ever eat meat again if I identify as a vegan? With so many ‘experts’ at our fingertips, are they influencing us? Scaring us? Or dampening our ability to think critically for ourselves? Settle in for the ride as Damian and Marcus discuss a recent podcast they listened to where an ‘expert’ made these outrageous comments. What is the damage that such clickbait has on people when it comes to deciding what best to add to their plate? As the pendulum on what to eat continues to swing from veganism to carnivore, does the truth on what best to eat lay somewhere in the middle? Leave your preconceived notions of food at home and join us on our Longevity Experiences to the Blue Zones of Ikaria and Sardinia in 2024. We are in Ikaria August 22-31 and Sardinia September 1-10. Are you one of the 80% of the population that are experiencing back pain? Do you know the difference between chronic and acute pain? Do you believe that back pain is a normal part of aging and something we just put up with? There is no doubt that as we get older, things start to lose their fluidity and strength and our ligaments are tighter. There is also no doubt that sitting is the new smoking. Join us today as Damo presents a Mastersclass in Back Pain and helps join the dots between the spine and brain connection; the importance of stretching and lengthening and maintenance. We touch on the many beneficial modalities including osteopathy, physiotherapy, myotherapy, massage and the benefit of regular Chiropractic care to ensure that your spine is in line so that the nerves work freely and communicate to the brain more efficiently. The reverse of SITTING is not to STAND, it is to STRETCH. To help with stretching, Damo has shared some of his favourite videos here: https://vimeo.com/564108287/9b0e8a0fe8 https://vimeo.com/401249143 During the show, Damo references Dr Heidi Haavik, you can find out more about her here. Is Damo sensitive now that he has turned the big 5-0 or is he actually experiencing ageism? With a 5 in front of his age AND a golf handicap of about 5, is he really too old for a golf tournament or is that blatant ageism? In this week’s episode we question if ageism is actually a cancer on society or are we overly sensitive? We know that people are living longer but dying slower. Is agesim and the limiting beliefs around ageing contributing to signing up for the slowest of deaths? Is an increasing number of candles on a birthday cake each year disempowering people when it comes to how they live their everyday life? Age is not the problem. Ageism is. As David Bowie once said “ageing is an extraordinary process where you become the person you always should have been”. In this episode we discussed Damo’s Crack Your Stress Code. You can listen to the Series on episode 485 and episode 486. Our Longevity Experiences to the Blue Zones of Ikaria and Sardinia return in 2024. Wellness Chef Sam Gowing on Cleanses, Fasting, Detox & Trends A dear friend of the podcast, Sam Gowing, is back to discuss the current state of the wellness industry. We discuss cleanses, fasting and detoxes, and the onset of the mythical healing crisis that so many people create for themselves by chasing one trend after another. Ideally you find this conversation somewhat liberating and feel less-inclined to fit a label or trend that is here one day, and gone the next! You can check out Sam’s latest creation, The Wellness Chef, here. For our Longevity Experiences to Ikaria and Sardinia, you can find them at 100notout.com
Damo has a bone to pick with Marcus! In Marcus’s Exceptional Life Blueprint he outlines 8 areas of life – Purpose, Movement, Social, Nutrition, Family, Growth, Wealth and Spirit. Damo believes social and family should be combined into “People”. Marcus shares how the energy of friends is very different to family, whilst Damo wants just 7 areas of life and not 8! Damo has started the New Year with a BANG! Or more to the point, a “Pull Over” and “Stop Right There”! No, Damo is not at Police Academy, but I did perform a quasi “citizens arrest” over Summer after watching an incident at his local golf club. The story is entertaining and the lesson is powerful. If we are to build stronger communities around us, we must hold each other to account. The behaviour we walk past is the behaviour we accept. So enjoy the story, and consider the lesson! *** Ikaria & Sardinia 2024 is coming! *** We are in the final weeks of finalising our groups for our Longevity Experiences to Ikaria and Sardinia. Apply to join us in one or both locations. All the details are at www.100notout.com Photo by niu niu on Unsplash

How many people do you know receive a congratulatory email from Andrea Bocelli and his wife when they complete a major achievement. Well our next guest – who we are proud to welcome back to 100 Not Out – received that very letter from Veronica and Andrea Bocelli … because at 78 years young, Don Riddington and 5 Englishmen set a new Guinness World Record for the Oldest Relay Team to Swim the English Channel … To be clear, they combined for a total age of 464 years NOT OUT, with an average age of 77.3 … And of course punching above his weight at age 78 was 100 Not Out’s version of The Don .. Cricket can have Don Bradman … 100 Not Out will claim Don Riddington as The Don, because after becoming Australia’s oldest man to swim the Channel at 68 back in 2013, he’s done it again at 78 with a bunch of mates! This is an inspiring story to kick off 2024!
Our annual look ahead towards 2024 focuses on wearable tech, health testing, AI, diet and of course, exercise. Damo said Strong and Long would become a thing in 2023 – aka stretching – and low and behold, Stretch Lab has begun to become in vogue whilst group HIIT seems to be phasing out. In other words, Damo gets this right every time! So tune in for a crystal ball of health, wellness and longevity futurism on this special Christmas Day episode and the final one of 2023! Every year we talk about the changing face of winning on Christmas Day! Whether your hosting or guest, spending time with loved ones or ones that rub you up the wrong way ... what is always on the menu is ... food! The first question that gets asked these days around food is dietaries! And on this Christmassy edition of 100 Not Out, Damo and MP discuss how to win on Christmas Day no matter if you're dealing with FODMAPS, vegetarian or vegan, gluten-free, dairy free, and so on. Merry Christmas!
It is quite disgusting – and concerning – that research on slowing down biological ageing has descended to this. You’re about to listen to us take the mickey out of the latest findings in slowing down biological ageing, which were presented to the American Heart Association (AMA). Damo plays the role of research scientist and Marcus, well he dabbles in between AHA Chairman and heckler and host of the podcast! In any case, we hope you see just how flawed the mainstream recommendations are on what it takes to live a great, long life. Here’s just one article outlining this “groundbreaking” research.
We are both self-proclaimed Christmas lovers. Carols, Christmas trees, the coming together of friends and family, and all that it means. But that’s not the case for everyone. Financial stress and family friction are just two factors that see a lot of people dreading this time of the year. Longevity cultures do special occasions in an extremely ceremonial manner. They are revered and treated with due respect. We touch on this in the context of our own upbringings in this Christmas edition of 100 Not Out.
Singapore has officially been unveiled as the 6th Blue Zone on planet earth, which makes our final instalment of our Live to 100 review even more poignant. In this conversation we discuss what makes Singapore so special … and the confidence it can give urban dwellers in living with quantity and quality of life. 2024 LONGEVITY EXPERIENCES – IKARIA AND SARDINIA Our small groups are taking shape for our trips to Ikaria and Sardinia in 2024. Damo is 50! (Well not quite at time of recording but he is now that you’re listening!) It was Damo turning 40 that had him say YES to starting the podcast 100 Not Out. And now, all these years later – what does Damo have to say to the younger version of himself? The answers may surprise you – we talk about the speed of life, the focus (or lack thereof) on movement, the amount of eating out we do in Australia, and the things we care – or stress – about. IKARIA & SARDINIA 2024 Perhaps you have a special birthday coming up?! Our trips to Ikaria and Sardinia are often birthday celebrations for attendees. We are in Ikaria August 22-31 and Sardinia September 1-10. All the details at 100notout.com
Have certain members of the longevity movement lost their mind?! We’re quite taken aback by Dave Asprey’s invitation to his community to undergo Gene Therapy in a bid to prolong life. Follistain Gene Therapy to be exact, which he invites people to partake it at a cost of $US 25k. We’re not joking, you can see it all here It’s fair to say this approach to longevity – and gene therapy – completely goes against our ethos on 100 Not Out. In the comments of his post on Instagram, Dave tells naysayers that they are undergoing gene therapy every time they eat hot chips, and so we are already doing it anyway. He references epigenetics – the environment that we place our genes in – as the key. On that point we agree, however we take a more macro look at epigenetics, and reference our chat with Mimi Kirk on episode 11, where she took us through her family history, her genes, and her determination to live a lifestyle completely opposite to her family. 2024 Longevity Experience Care to join us in Ikaria and/or Sardinia in August & September 2024 for our 100 Not Out Longevity Experience? We’ve been going since 2016 and it’s fair to say these trips are a bucket lis trip of a lifetime. All the details at 100notout.com Image source: Instagram @dave.asprey

Did you know that the Mediterranean diets of Ikaria and Sardinia are extremely different! In Ikaria you won’t find much pasta at all, and yet in Sardinia you will find it in spades. Sardinians love lamb and even eat horse! You won’t find a horse on Ikaria! Such differences open the conversation of what a longevity diet looks like – and what it doesn’t. This episode (and next weeks) features Dr Damian Kristof presenting at our recent 100 Not Out Longevity Evening in Melbourne. The last two weeks have been Marcus’s presentation around lifestyle. Today and next week focus heavily on nutrition. If all of this fascinates you as much as it does us, you’re invited to join us in Ikaria and Sardinia in 2024 for our next 100 Not Out Longevity Experience. Come to one or both longevity hotspots – all the details at www.100notout.com
In Ikaria they experience 80% less dementia than the rest of the world. Not to mention 50% less heart disease and 20% less cancer. But today we look into dementia, as shared by Marcus in a recent 100 Not Out Longevity Evening. This recording from the event discusses some of the hidden clues that our lifestyle gives us – namely cholesterol and blood pressure, which are for many people precursors to dementia.
