The RAI’s report shows that 212 restaurants, cafés and other food-led businesses have shut their doors for good so far in 2024, meaning a total loss of up to €288 million to the economy and State already this year.   Gina Murphy, Owner of the restaurant Hugo gave Shane her reaction to these report findings. 

Telefónica Tec has been announced as the successful vendor for the tender to provide numerous infrastructure technology solutions to Children’s Health Ireland   Speaking to Shane this morning was Ellen Dickson, Vice President of Enterprise Health Practice with Telefónica Tech. 

Construction activity moved into positive territory for the first time in almost a year last month.  According to the BNP Paribas Real Estate Ireland Construction Index residential building is driving the market upwards but input costs such as steel and concrete are also rising rapidly.  John McCartney is director of research at BNP Paribas real estate discussed these findings with Shane Beatty this morning on the show.

The great and the good in European transport planning convene in Dublin this week for the TRA 2024 conference.  Whether it’s bikes, scooters, cars, trams or trains, how people move about is central to the efficiency of any economy - and heaven knows that Ireland lags many of its EU neighbour when it comes to public transport.     Speaking to Shane ahead of the conference was Dr Albert Daly is the Director of TRA2024 and also the head of Transport Infrastructure Ireland, where his focus is on Research and Standards.

Despite some reports suggesting that perks, company values and maybe even remote working matter the most to employees, a survey by Adare HRM suggests that good old-fashioned money is still the main factor for workers moving jobs.  Thankfully it found that employers intend to raise wages this year. It also found that absenteeism is up and that the vast majority of firms experience some sort of workplace conflict. Anyone who has bought or sold a house in this country will know that it can be a time-consuming, messy and sometimes expensive process. At the moment only solicitors can handle conveyancing. And now there is a major new report out from the legal services regulatory authority which aims at boosting price transparency among solicitors and moving towards full digitalisation of conveyancing. But the report stops short of recommending a distinct and separate profession of conveyancing – which is the case already in the UK. Joe speaks with Brian Doherty is the chief executive of the LSRA 

An IPO - or Initial Public offering is when private companies go public and float on the stock markets. Last year the value of IPOs worldwide went up but the number of companies doing so went down. It comes as 2 prominent IPOs in the past fortnight - Trump media and Reddit have fallen dramatically since their debut. Regionally the Americas continue to lead the way while Asia has weakened. Joe speaks to Fergal McAleavey, EY Ireland Corporate Finance Partner on the matter.

When you buy a house in this country, you may pay stamp duty but you don’t pay any commission, but in the US, the buyer and the seller both have to pay a commission of around 6% of the sale price. Also we call them estate agents, but they are called “realtors“ in the states, and that name is patent-protected in an oligopolistic way. There’s been a recent court ruling which could upend the property market in the United States and save buyers and sellers a lot of money. For more on this Joe spoke to property technology expert and founder of the company, OFFR.io, Robert Hoban. 

The annual salary guide from the recruitment company Cpl is out.  Among the findings is that Cork is 22% cheaper than Dublin and that a typical banker can expect to earn €30,000 a year while a restaurant manager can expect €50,000.  Newly qualified solicitors can expect €75,000.  The report also looked into attitudes to remote working and the in-demand qualifications. WIth more details on the findings Joe spoke to Barry Winkless, Chief Strategy Officer at Cpl Group.

We know about the technology sector and the creative sector but there is now something called the Creative Technology sector.  These are the startups and scaleups who create the games and visual effects that we’ll all be seeing or playing with in the near future.  And the first Incubation hub for creative tech was opened in Galway at the weekend at the Atlantic Technological University campus beside the G Hotel. Niamh Costello is the Founding director of Galway City Innovation District and told Joe all about the new venture.

Cathal Friel a serial entrepreneur having started hVIVO and Poolbeg pharma.  His latest venture European Green Transition floated on the AIM stock market in London yesterday and values the company at around €17m. EGT hopes to find rare Earth metals which can be used to transition away from fossil fuels.  Cathal joined Joe in studio this morning to chat about his latest venture.

At 10,800, the capacity of the SSE Arena in Belfast is just behind Dublin’s 3 Arena which can hold 13,000.  Last Year the SSE welcomed 800,000 people for concerts, exhibitions and ice hockey matches which shows its versatility. Now the SSE is introducing the ‘Just walk Out’ technology from amazon which speeds up shopping within the complex.  Claire Cosgrave  Associate Director with the SSE Arena joined Joe on the show this morning.

You may have noticed a new brand on the shelves water in a can called Liquid Death.  Apart from an arresting name, the company behind it is now valued at $1.4bn. It’s very popular with younger consumers with 8 media followers on social media .The brand uses comedy and coolness to combat climate change and thirst. Speaking to Joe this morning was Oli Russell-Cowan -Liquid Death’s Director of Cult Indoctrination Europe.
