Om Shine Festival

This week will see the world mark International Day of The Girl.
In 2011, The United Nations declared October 11th as the official International Day of the Girl to recognise girls’ rights and the unique challenges that girls face worldwide.
The annual event shines a spotlight on two central themes:
The promotion of girls’ empowerment and the encouragement of countries to create solutions that will help girls fulfil their basic human rights.
Here in the South East, the global day will be marked by the annual multi-award-winning Shine Festival which is now in its 5th year.
Shine Festival is supported every year by Beat 102-103 and was founded by Waterford’s Tammy Darcy who runs The Shona Project. Based in Waterford, The Shona Project is a global movement aimed at empowering young girls.
This Wednesday and Thursday will see 2,000 teenage girls flock to the S.E.T.U arena where they will hear inspirational women speak, they’ll get to connect with each other and come away, Tammy hopes with a better sense of the importance of valuing their worth.
