Log on, log off
Sune Lehman who’s a professor of Complexity and Network Science at the Technical University of Denmark was introduced to Sturla via Johann Hari and his new book «Stolen Focus» about how to get back our attention that is stolen from us by Big Tech, and Sunes perspectives are mostly about the speed of things online. In this episode though Sune the person and hobby philosopher meets Sturla the person and hobby philosopher for an open talk about the world and its ideas. In the preparation for this convo they both logged on Twitter and before they log of again today june 1st they share there common experiences from the platform after about 2 months of using it since they agreed to do this pod. Highly intersting, tune in!
To paraphrase the great Norwegian essayist Georg Johannesen in his preface to the translation of Tu Fu: «The evening tabloids come out every day, but an interview about Confucius with philosophy professor Bryan Van Norden (Vassar College, NY) on a Norwegian podcast comes out only every 2000th year — it should have been the other way around.» An absolute must-listen!
Sturla rightfully got some friendly critique from Ole Martin Moen (Oxford/Oslo Met) for only having skeptics on discussing free will and moral responsibility and took it as a challenge. In this episode he is talking to philsophy professor Eddy Nahmias (Georgia State) about the compatibalist view, and about the view that one can be punished solely to inflict harm on wrongdoers. Eddy is explaining this view in a most sympathetic and commonsensical manner and as it turns out the two fonds more common ground than points of contention. As promised by his «friends» from the skeptic side the conversation with Eddy ended up very fruitful and Sturla so far can only agree with Derk Pereboom that the free will scene is a super cool scene with super cool people - on all sides - this far.
Likhet for Loven
Kings of Bastøy 2: James
“I believe rehabilitation is a tribute to victims” Sturla speaks with columnist and convicted murderer James Erwin about the importance of tolerance when striving for a better society. During their conversation we learn about the difference between the UK’s punitive approach in contrast with Norway’s more compassionate philosphy in regard to correctional services. James also tells us about his own path from lawless to law abiding citizen. Tune in!
