Developing a red light therapy treatment protocol has never been so easy and individualized! My passion project for the last 6 - 10 months has been putting together an ecosystem that will allow anyone with any type of red light therapy device from any company to easily and accurately produce a protocol based on what they are trying to treat. At the end of the day, I believe that this tool will become ubiquitous amongst the red light therapy space — from those using RLT on themselves all the way to physicians and medical facilities utilizing RLT for their patients.As it currently stands, people have been typically been provided with the archaic advice of, "Do red light therapy 20 - 30 minutes every day!" But what if one person has a higher-powered RLT panel or laser compared to someone that has a lower-powered RLT or handheld device? What if someone is utilizing RLT for anti-aging skin versus someone employing RLT for dementia or TBI? Let's not forget that every single person responds to a given treatment differently! So a blanketed statement of advice, such as the one above, never made sense to me.Thus, I set out to develop protocols that you have all seen in the first four editions of the eBook. But it hit me last year that while that was a great step in the right direction, it still handcuffed a lot of people because those protocols are essentially centered around a particular light irradiance. So I set out to create the ecosystem that is being released today that, again, allows a person with any type of RLT device to produce an effective, nuanced protocol based on what they are trying to treat. The average brain weighs about three pounds (less than 2% of the average human weight), yet it accounts for about 20% of the body's total energy consumption. That inherently means the brain is extremely mitochondrial dense, as the mitochondria produce ~95% of all the energy in body. Ok, so all numbers aside, the brain is an immensely important organ from a health, energy and, thus, mitochondrial perspective. That means we need to have strategies in place for both acute trauma to the brain and for chronic conditions like neurodegeneration.In today's solosode, we will review two hot-off-the-press articles that happen to surround this very topic. The first article looks at the potential of methylene blue (MB) as a key substance that can effectively address three exceptionally varying brain conditions: traumatic brain injuries (TBIs), ischemia and Alzheimer's disease. At the end of the day, MB has a profound role to play in all of those ailments.The second article hones in on TBIs and antioxidant therapeutics that specifically target the mitochondria. Based on the abundant information provided in the article (albeit they did not include MB or C60 as an antioxidant strategy; I imagine there results would be even more staggering if they did!), it is quite clear that even in an acute injury, such as TBI, the mitochondria play an ever central role — in this case, both the damage from the physical trauma and also the healing and recovery process.​​Hint hint: we already know that red light therapy is becoming widely accepted as an effective modality for treating head traumas, such as concussions, TBIs, etc,. Now we have this new research looking at the impact of antioxidant therapeutics that target the mitochondria. Antioxidants donate electrons. Methylene blue and C60 are some of the best electron donors available as therapeutics. However, unlike most other antioxidants, both MB and C60 can actually get inside the mitochondria. Did you know C60 can be beneficial for the health of dogs and other pets just like it is for humans? It should make sense, as, after all, our pet / family members have mitochondria just like us! I've personally been giving my german shepherd some BioC60 in the morning and evening with his meals. But now there is some interesting research demonstrating that C60 mixed in oil can significantly reduce the blood levels of CRP in dogs, which is a blood marker for inflammation. In today's episode, I review that very study on C60 and also discuss how different types of oils (i.e., MCT oil vs. avocado oil vs. olive oil) allow for different concentration levels of C60. Do you know which oil allows for maximal C60 concentration? That same article also looks at C60 for skin health and demonstrates many ways that carbon 60 can augment our integumentary system.I also review two photobiomodulation studies that are hot off the press and published this year: one that looks at how red light therapy can reduce the stay in the intensive care unit (ICU) by 30% and another that provides compelling evidence for red light therapy to reduce pain associated with dysmenorrhea.Lastly, I cover a german​ article published last month that suggests that dysfunctional mitochondria may play a large role in individuals dealing with migraines. As methylene blue becomes more and more popular, it becomes paramount to seek out and learn from trusted sources and experts in the area. With the full reveal of The Mitochondrial Triad coming soon, it begs the question: why do I believe the focal point of our health, wellness, and, more precisely, our longevity is centered around or organelle friends, the mitochondria? And with the first two pillars being disclosed, in red light therapy and methylene blue, what is the third pillar? All of these questions are answered in today's solosode!For decades, the primary thesis for why we age was The Free Radical Theory of aging. However, this doesn't hold up in instances where someone consistently exercises (and, thus, produces more ATP that inherently produces more of the natural byproduct of free radicals) that leads to health- and longevity-promoting benefits. That's where The Mitochondrial Theory of Aging emerges and is currently the most respected postulation on why we age. However, the first rendition of this theory still included free radicals as a main culprit for aging; this was remedied in the second version, which removed free radicals as the central causation for aging and suggested the main source was in the numerous mechanisms lying within the mitochondria. There seems to be another wicked virus going around and I seemed to find (or, more accurately, it found me) during my trip to Seattle. Luckily, I had packed my BioBlue Leuco! Ever curious about what results people in the "real world" are achieving with red light therapy? Well this past week on BioLight's Instagram page, we had a feed post to elicit some responses and, oh boy, did it ever. So much that I felt compelled to highlight some of the comments left by people to showcase the variety of ways people are successfully utilizing red light therapy to benefit their health and wellness. From vision to numerous skin health benefits to excelling in exercise/lifting to improving children's sleep and more!The proverbial meat and potatoes of this episode is introducing and learning about methylene blue's reduced version, leucomethylene blue. This is what your body intrinsicly processes methylene blue into that is ingested, but there are some major advantages to taking leucomethylene blue. It's almost instantly bioavailable (as your body does not have to break it down, as it does with MB), the antioxidant effect is nearly immediate (for the same reason) and it has even less toxins than MB (since reducing the MB to leucoMB further removes any metals, toxins. etc; but keep in mind that pharmaceutical grade MB is already very pure. This is only to say the leucoMB is inherently more pure because of it being further reduced and, thus further purified).The above advantages have led to the following personal anecdotal responses since I started using leucomethylene blue: a more rapid cognitive/focus boost and enhanced exercise performance (I have found leucoMB to function essentially as a pre-workout, but without all the junk and jitters. One of the more common questions I get asked, as it relates to red light therapy, is how is it different than infrared saunas? Do they elicit the same health benefits? Which one is "better"? If I had to choose one, which modality should I use? This week we are going to dig into some interesting research I've been compiling the last several months (and I have plenty more where this came from!). We will cover an array of our favorite topics in red light therapy, mitochondria and methylene blue. We will first look at a piece of research that discusses primary mitochondrial diseases (PMDs); however, the article is directed towards physicians and how they can start to recognize patterns and red flags associated with various PMDs (i.e., mitochondrial dysfunction). To me this is extremely exciting in the sense that this type of mitochondrial information is (slowly but surely) permeating its way into the allopathic world. It can't happen fast enough!The second article looks at methylene blue and a new, yet quite similar synthetic dye salt, blue compound called toluidine blue. The study looks at how when used together, they have a synergistic effect against oral squamous cell carcinoma. I need to know more about toluidine blue!The third article looks at the effect of transcranial photobiomodulation on concussions. This study is a perfect example of a "non-result" not necessarily being a bad thing or that is should be taken at face value. I will discuss why.The last, and likely most relevant, study I review is on red light therapy's impact on reducing pain and improving function with plantar fasciitis (PF). I've personally never dealt with PF, but I have treated it countless times as a physical therapist and know many other people that have dealt with it -- long story short, it is not fun in the slightest and is incredibly easy for it to become a chronic and/or recurring issue. Red light therapy certainly has a role to play with PF. And, based on my experience, cupping may be one of the BEST modalities in the fight against PF. It seems that (rather unintentionally) at the beginning of each year, I begin with some episodes on some interesting and novel topics. Two years ago it was reviewing a book on extensive and profound research from the late 1800s to mid-1900s on how light entering our eyes affects virtually every system in our body. As we visit the third and final "Top Episode of 2023", we will turn our attention to our relatively new best red light therapy friend: methylene blue! For those of you that have already heard this episode and/or are familiar with this polarizing substance, this episode is a fantastic review; for those of you that are less familiar, this is a great introduction into the vast potential of methylene blue.... For the second top episode of 2023, we are going back to the basics! It's a wrap! The Spotify variety, if you know what I mean... This year I thought it would be fun to do a live "unwrapping" of the Podcasters Wrapped, which provides fun information and insights about your podcast (those that use Spotify are oh so familiar with this fun annual event!).
