In this episode, University of Wisconsin Sustainable Management program manager, Amanda Goetsch, sits down with Tia Nelson, daughter of Gaylord Nelson, to hear about how she is working to create a better future through education, bridge building, storytelling, and more. Tia Nelson is internationally recognized as a tireless champion for environmental stewardship and climate change education. She spent 17 years with The Nature Conservancy in government relations, as a policy advisor for Latin America, and later as the first director of the Global Climate Change Initiative. For this work, she received the EPA’s Climate Protection Award in 2000. Tia returned home to Wisconsin to serve as Executive Secretary to the Wisconsin Board of Commissioners of Public Lands, which included a gubernatorial appointment as co‐chair of Wisconsin’s Task Force on Global Warming. She directs Outrider Foundation’s climate program, a nonpartisan educational nonprofit committed to making the world safer and more secure. Grab your favorite beverage and get ready for a great podcast episode with our guest Paul Graham, CEO of Central Waters Brewing Co. in Amherst, Wisconsin. Right out of the University of Wisconsin-Stevens point, Paul began working with the original founders of the brewery. A few years later Paul ended up purchasing the business and pouring his heart and soul into every detail. Paul states, “I make a lot of decisions with my heart,” and that’s exactly what you’ll hear through this interview. We dive into details about collaboration within the brewing industry, sharing of next best practices in sustainability, waste, water, energy, community and people. Central Waters isn’t flashy with the marketing of their sustainability practices. The crew there is intentional about what they do, how they operate and how they produce their product. Paul believes sustainability is not an option; in his opinion they are required to integrate it into what they do as they are stewards of the land, always trying to improve. In October of 2019, Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers signed Executive Order #52 which established the Governor’s Task Force on Climate Change. Phil is the Director at Sustainable Building Solutions and Director of Sustainability at Hunzinger Construction. As Sustainability Director, Phil is responsible for working with the project team in order to identify opportunities and assist with implementing strategies that will enhance sustainability goals and LEED Certification initiatives on the project. Phil has worked as a project sustainability and LEED Consultant on over 50 LEED Certified Projects in the State of Wisconsin. He has hands-on knowledge and experience with rating systems and best practices in sustainability. In 2017 Phil was awarded the “Award of Excellence” for “Most Successful Community Engagement” for his local Leadership at the USGBC Wisconsin Leader Awards & Transformation Awards Reception. We talk budget cycles, building commissioning, energy codes, building material specification, project verification, and market trends in the sustainable built environment. Myths about building certifications and costs are debunked and we take a look at consumer expectations in 2019. Mary Evers Statz is the sustainability director and leads the energy management and sustainability efforts throughout the UW Health system which includes 7 hospitals and over 80 clinics in south central Wisconsin and northern Illinois and serves more than 600,000 patients each year. In this position Mary is responsible for the corporate vision and strategy to make UW Health a more environmentally friendly enterprise. Mary holds her Master’s in Sustainable Management and has over 25 years design, construction and facility management experience.
