Honoring Dance Music Now with Sherman Harris

Music isn't just for our entertainment. It emerged as a response to oppression. This week's episode features Sherman Harris, a DJ who has spent decades in the music industry playing at parties, appearing at festivals, and working as a radio show producer and host. In this show, Sherman shares his passion for music, and he explains how dance music, rap, hip hop, and R&B came from Black culture and Black artists. My biggest takeaway from the show is that when I listen to music without understanding the context in which it was made, I'm missing the whole point and causing harm. Music is a chance for us to better understand what other people's experiences are like. I hope this podcast episode with Sherman helps you appreciate music in a deeper way—which includes honoring Black artists and the movement behind them.
