Overhyped and Overlooked Approaches to Physiotherapy and Fitness
In this episode of Real Talk, I have the amazing opportunity to catch up with my former colleague and amazing physio (to me personally and to my clients) Dan Arthur. Dan has been a great source of knowledge and wisdom to me and I so admire his approach to physiotherapy - so much so, I wanted to capture some of his thoughts surrounding what is working and what is not when it comes to helping people get better in their rehabilitation. So often we look for 'easy' ways to deal with our issues including our own injuries. We search for passive methodologies such as massage in hopes that it will not only feel good, but that it will also address our needs. All too often, we end up using the same methodologies time and time again for prolonged periods without stopping to realise that if we keep using the same service and we are not seeing any improvement in our condition, perhaps the methodology isn't what is going to fix the problem at hand. I love the lengths upon which Dan goes to educate his client and how he questions their thinking and highlights important distinctions we need to make in order to get well. Such an important and powerful conversation, Dan is a hugely missed part of my professional network in Singapore and what a huge gain for the UK to have him there. Please be sure to connect with him in the following ways and as always, if you take value from this episode, leave us a rating and review
How to Eat for a Healthy Thyroid
In this week’s episode, I am back speaking with my good friend and dietician Sam Armstrong on how you can eat for a healthy thyroid. So many of my Superstar ✨ clients come to me with thyroid issues and concerns so I thought I might as well tap into the wealth of knowledge that is Sam Armstrong and find out how we can eat for a healthy thyroid. Turns out, thyroid is super important especially when it comes to a healthy metabolism and ability to lose weight and shift body fat and the good news is that there is a lot we can do to support the thyroid when it comes to lifestyle and nutrition. Now don’t get me wrong, neither one of us are endocrinologists so if you feel that you may have a thyroid condition, it’s best you go and see a hormone expert but if you have a sub-clinical thyroid condition, chances are, you will uncover a lot of little gems in this episode with chronic fatigue being a major indication you may have thyroid related issues - who knew?! All too often we get used to feeling a certain way without questioning it or taking time to investigate those symptoms and fatigue certainly fits into that category. Being pulled in so many different directions and having so many responsibilities and commitments between work, family and personal life, we can become very accepting of tiredness and chronic fatigue. Following this conversation with Sam, I am seeing the value in questioning how acceptable chronic fatigue should be because there may be a lot more to it than meets the eye. Interesting to learn too that the often bloodwork does not reveal all when it comes to thyroid as some markers mirror each other on a chemistry level and hence why it is SO important to be working with someone who knows what they’re doing and what to look out for if you are experiencing some of the symptoms we cover. Enjoy the show, as always, please connect with Sam on the following social platforms and leave us a review with your greatest takeaway. It took me 10 years to say this; I owe you Candice
Candice King should come to mind if you ever want to know how I got to be what shaped my journey into the health and fitness industry. She and twin sister Jess were both at one stage a manager at a gym and pool facility in Brisbane where I really started to establish myself as a health and fitness professional. Both Candice and Jess and played enormous roles in guiding me to where I am today. In this episode, I get to speak with Candice, reflect on old times, what we have seen change in the industry over the past 10 years (that’s how long it has been since I started working in alongside Candice). Despite now being in different parts of the world, we have some similar observations when it comes to helping people become the healthiest version of thesmselves and it is an amazing opportunity to reconnect with Candice and catch up - seems as though no time has passed since we last spoke. Not one to give advice without someone asking, but (and there is a but), if I had to offer my 2 cents to anyone who is new to any industry, I would absolutely have to suggest finding someone who is an established expert in their field and cling onto them for dear life. Put a GPS tracker on them, ask questions, pick their brain and never let them go. What an incredible catch-up, conversation to reflect and insights on how we can continue to better the health and fitness industry. It must be said, that in order to improve anything, we first, must begin with ourselves.
Why we lose 60kg and keep 30 off; beyond the fad diets and running
Holy hell, you had better have your notebook out and ready to take notes because this gal drops some serious #truthbomb moments and I really do hope that her messages and words of wisdom reach you on a deep level because believe you me, there is reason you keep yo-yo dieting, there is a reason why you keep ‘failing’ and there is a reason why you find yourself with the same problems time and time again. Chances are, if you have the same problems you had yesterday, you are not working on the essence of your problems and I’m afraid to say, you cannot address those problems with any diet or approach to exercise. No, it simply won’t do. This is where we have a heck of a lot of work to do in the health and fitness industry - mental health. Our familiarity with the topic of mindset is one that is yet to evolve to the point of us easily drawing parallels between emotion and food, behaviours surrounding food as well as exercise and everything in between. Have you ever paused to think about how the way you judge yourself impacts your health? Me neither, well, not until really recently and it’s a topic so worth exploring. Lauren shares great insights, ‘ah-‘ha moments and learnings over the course of the past 6 years for her. i have had the great pleasure of training her and hearing all about her journey: what has worked, what she thought worked, what definitely didn’t work, what marketing lead her to believe would work (and likely didn’t), what actually feels good for her and what is working (even if unconventional or not currently being marketed) and so much more. Our conversation serves as a great reminder that it’s likely we don’t need more information. It’s likely we don’t need more or different approaches. It’s likely we have more than what we need, what we truly need help with is application and that’s where self appreciation and self love comes into play. It’s likely that by taking a moment to connect with your body, you will know what feels good and true for you - not everyone loves running, yoga or 6am bootcamps which is something myself and Lauren certainly have in common and a lot of people aren’t ‘breakfast’ people! The number of gems and pearls of wisdom that Lauren drops in this episode is insane and please hear her when she says that there are no short cuts. None. Zippity zilch. There is alignment and application and patience and repetition and that’s it. That is it. She is now 6 years into this chapter of her journey and she continues to evolve her mindset and approach as she learns more about how she can leverage her headspace to optimal health - not just physical health either. I am super damn proud of this gal and so very fortunate to have her share more about her learnings with me. I do hope you enjoy hearing more about how she has stepping up to take back her power and allow herself to look after herself. Be sure to leave us a rating and review below
Communicate Your Way to Better Health
In this week's episode of Real Talk, I speak with communications maven and my gal pal Corrie Van. Corrie has over 15 years' experience in the field of communications including her work in journalism and now corporate health and wellness. In this episode, we cover how different people communicate differently and how we naturally have different inclinations on how we send as well as receive communication. Turns out communication is incredibly multi-dimensional. Are you someone who sends long, paragraphed messages or are you the type of person who can get their message across in one line? It is so interesting how we are so different and the implications this can have on our health. Why and how does communication play a role in how healthy we are? You will have to listen to find out! Please be sure to connect with Corrie on the links provided and leave us a rating and review of your biggest take away.
Deficiencies of the ‘Health and Fitness’ Industry
There’s a reason for the quotation marks in the show title and I believe it’s fair to say that Christian and myself often feel as though the health and fitness industry ins’t doing what it should. You would think that the health and fitness industry would help people rather than hurt or harm or even mislead people, but if often does. You should assume that when you turn up to work with a health and fitness professional that they would be sufficiently qualified but that is not always the case. You would hope that the industry would be saturated enough with experts that your journey could be streamlined by engaging the use of health and fitness services - this cannot always be said. I have to say, I so love Christian’s passion and completely echo his frustrations being touted as arrogant or an asshole, the thing is, people who genuinely give a shit about the health, fitness and wellbeing of others cannot stand to see other people dip their toe into this industry which has the primary role of demonstrating CARE. When you have been in an industry as long as Christian has (15 years), you can spot ‘hobby’ personal trainers and ‘fitfluencers’ a mile away - you learn to smell BS. If I’ve learned one thing over the years in working with people, it’s that you absolutely cannot fake genuine care for others. You either care for someone and will therefore go out of your way to show it or you don’t. If you’re the later, please, allow me to show you the door. What does the industry need? More passionate people who care about betting themselves so that they can care for others and empower others to care for themselves. There are AMPLE deficiencies within the health and fitness industry and we have a mountain to climb if we ever want to be seen in the same light as other professionals such as dentists, lawyers, engineers, pilots, IT experts etc. Please be sure to connect with Christian on the follow platforms and as always, if you enjoyed this episode, leave a rating and let us know what your greatest take away was. Enjoy!
How to Transform your Life Endlessly with Keezia Leigh
In this week’s episode of Real Talk, I have the great honour and pleasure of speaking with Bossbabe and mum-to-be Keezia. It has been a wild ride following her journey from when she was 21 up until now. She has showcased her ability to transform and evolve to such an extent, I had to reach out and ask if she would be a part of the show as I wanted to understand the HOW behind transformation. It is interesting to observe that there are many parallels between fitness and business and how we both (Keezia and myself) recognise the marketing bullshit that masks where the real work needs to be done in order to get people to where we want to go whether that is with regards to their health and fitness or business. In order to physically transform, it is imperative that a transformation occurs on a mental, emotional and spiritual level too. If you are in business, it simply isn’t enough to have a lead gen, landing page, website, Facebook ads etc if you yourself does not know what it is that you are selling and why you are selling that product or service. We cover and unpack so many interesting topics in this show including identify death - a term I had not previously heard of prior to this recording and something that myself and Keezia can identify with. Sometimes allowing yourself to let go of the ties you previously had with your identity so that a deeper layer of your identity can come through is a painful and powerful part of creating transformation - something that allows you to let go of the “I’m always going to be the large girl in the room” mentality or the “I can’t break through 10K month glass ceiling” hurdle. Re-Creating your Identity - Life After Sport with Reece Anderson
In this week’s episode, I learn just how much you can connect with someone you hardly know. Turns out, the person next to you probably has more in common with you than you realize. Would you believe that I barely know Reece - I ‘social media’ know him and have been following his story and journey for some time though we have never crossed paths, that is, until now. The amazing space that was created in recording this episode left me just about in tears in admiration and appreciation for the acceptance that Reece displayed. Turns out, we have far more in common than I knew. In this episode, we cover the shared experience of seeing our previous ties and identity to sport die. We connect with the relatability of not knowing who we were without our respective sports and how we were able to re-build our identity without it being regular practice. Although not everyone who hears this will have a background as an elite level athlete, several listeners will have experienced an evolutionary change whether that be experiencing a mid-life crisis, entering parenthood, moving countries, injury or divorce. There is ample power in understanding what, how and why you identify yourself the way that you do and how you can re-shape and re-build that to serve you at every stage in life. Enjoy the episode and please be sure to share with us your biggest take-away. An enormous thank you to Reece for this powerful conversation, for your vulnerability and acceptance. Building Resilience with Leon Stenslholm
In this week’s episode, I dive deep on the topic of resilience with author, speaker, personal trainer, contest prep coach and counsellor Leon Stensholm. We go into what resilience is, how it is created, whether it is something that intrinsically exists within us or whether it is something that needs to be built (nature vs nurture argument). We look at how people handle tough times, how that differs and how we can help others to flex their resilience muscle. This is a truly powerful episode and was personally an amazing conversation to have - one that really stretched my mind and perspective on how adversity can shape us for the better and how in some people, they can crumble when they do not have resilience, when their resilience is tested beyond a certain point or when they do not feel supported. It provides us with an opportunity to reflect on how sport has played a key role in developing or at least flexing our resilience muscles for both myself and Leon who have been involved with sports from a young age. Sport has taught us that you learn nothing from winning and everything from ‘losing’. How much can you tolerate? How many times are you willing to get back up on your feet after something goes wrong, after you lose your business and your body’s full capacity to function? How bad can life get whilst maintaining the same level of enthusiasm for it? Interesting and powerful questions to ask yourself. Thank you Leon for this conversation, for your perspectives and for sharing your incredible stories. How to lose 10kg and keep it off with Superstar Aditi
In this week's episode, I have the great fortune of speaking with Superstar Aditi. Aditi was in the beta testing round of my online program - Banging Body Blueprint after Instastalking me for quite some time. We catch up to see how she is getting on following the program. What she shares surprises and inspires me. This was such an incredible conversation to have with so many amazing and easy-to-implement takeaways for those looking to achieve what she has. We cover the healthy habits that she has created for herself and HOW exactly she managed to continue to implement them even with a busy work schedule and young son to take care of. What's next for Aditi? Who knows! One thing is for sure, she knows no limits and that perhaps is the most amazing transformation of them all.
Genetically Informed Corporate Health Programs with Corrie Van
In this episode, I have the great pleasure in speaking with my good friend and corporate health disruptor Corrie Van. Having founded her own consulting company that specialises in corporate health, Corrie is bringing something very new and very much needed in the corporate landscape when it comes to corporate health programs. With more than 15 years communications experience in the corporate world, plus a further 7 years in fitness, nutrition and health, Corrie is now obsessed with innovating new ways of motivating and inspiring healthier habits in the workplace and having a far more profound effect than discounted gym memberships. Her goal is simple – to empower companies and thought leaders to build and nurture cohesive teams through each employee’s individual biology and drive measurable results through game changing techniques and epigenetic profiling. Debunking the Keto Diet with Sam Armstrong
In this episode with my good friend and dietician Sam Armstrong, we cover all things keto diet. Chances are, the keto diet is NOT suited to you though you will have to listen to really find out for sure. WE cover who the diet IS suited to, the difference between a keto and low carb diet and what constitutes a keto diet by its correct definition. You may be surprised to hear about the potential downsides and dangers of being on a keto diet. It could in fact be time you stopped taking nutrition advice from your hairdresser. My guess is, you will learn a lot listening to this episode. Epic Goal Setting with Evan Button
In this episode - the very first episode, former colleague and pro baseball player Evan Button and myself talk about all things goal setting. We discuss common pitfalls we see when it comes to New Year Resolutions and goal setting especially when it comes to the realm of health and fitness; the importance of setting HEALTHY and well-thought-out goals and how including a coach into your approach can accelerate your results. Personally, this was a super valuable episode for me and I had a few ‘ah-ha’ moments myself. Super enjoyed unpacking different mechanisms we have when setting goals and why some people reach their goals whilst others struggle. May you enjoy listening as much as I enjoyed recording; please be sure to drop us some love by leaving a review and be sure to check out both Evan and my social media profiles; special ‘thank you’ to Evan for your time, energy and insights in piecing together this episode!
