Shakespeare berører i dette stykket basale spørsmål som makt og moral, skyld og redsel, paranoia og galskap. Hva skjer når ambisjonen om makt overstyrer moralske dilemmaer? Vi kommer på innsiden av et forbrytersinn, og blir vitne til stigende moralsk anarki. Gjennom Lady Macbeths rolle, blir også spørsmål rundt kjønn og identitet løftet opp.
