Since leaving her role as Acting Editor in Chief and Deputy Editor of ELLE, Lotte pivoted into advertising and worked for Portas, and Ogilvy as Head of Content and Creative Director, respectively. Lotte is the cohost of a queer parenting podcast called Some Families.

Lotte published her first book ‘How to be a Gentlewoman: The Art of Soft Power in Hard Times' a few months before the pandemic, and during our conversation, Lotte reflects on how the key themes in the part memoir, part manual have stood the test of time and enormous change in circumstances.

In this episode, we talk about the importance of empathetic leadership, but also how to differentiate it from emotional labour. Lotte tells us how she became more conscious of the type of leader she wanted to be, with a real focus on communication and compassion in the workplace.

We talk about how structure and routine is getting us through this third UK lockdown, how to give yourself a boost and create boundaries with our working lives. And finally, Lotte tells us her approach to managing conflict online, sharing a story that exemplifies soft power in the face of misogyny.

This conversation was recorded on 1st February 2021.
