Feeling Discouraged & How to Get Through It

Feeling discouraged is totally normal, but many of us don't know how to move forward from those feelings & not let these emotions hold us in a pit of despair. Today I want to talk about what we can do about feeling discouraged & how normal this is.

Show Notes:

I feel discouraged all the time. I’m not kidding. It can eat me up sometimes, too, because I let it affect me too much & be too important in the moment, meaning nothing else matters & I’m now in a bad mood. And it’s heavy, you know? It feels like a heavy burden that brings sadness & this feeling of being stuck in life. I don’t like it.

But being discouraged is something we all suffer from, some more than others because we let it affect us deeper & more often. But still another universal problem. And a problem & experience I find interesting because once you feel discouraged about one thing, it is so easy to pile on even more things to be discouraged about. It’s apparently our negativity bias pushing us to really lean into the negative things happening around us & only acknowledge those things. I can also see this as being blinded by the bad things we experience. It’s easy to do & hard to pull away from.

We allow ourselves to be discouraged because it’s easier than pulling ourselves up & understanding that not everything is going to happen on our timeline or the way we want it to. We get discouraged because we have put certain rules in place in our lives of what it means to be happy, accomplished, successful, fulfilled, worthy, loved, ect. This is the issue.

We get wrapped up in being in control of our lives so much that we don’t allow room for error or just life to be life & surprise us & take us on the unknown journey. We are kind of setting ourselves up for failure this way because if we determine what set of circumstances need to happen for us to feel accomplished or happy & those things don’t happen, then we feel discouraged. Or if we feel like we did everything right but still didn’t get the job or keep the boyfriend or girlfriend or get chosen to do something amazing, then we feel discouraged. The danger of playing by these rules is also that we may never realize we are successful or on the right path because we are so distracted by feeling down about not meeting our own unrealistic expectations. And if you didn’t know these were unrealistic, now you do.

Today I want to share with you 5 ways to get through feeling discouraged so you don’t get stuck in that loop of sadness & chasing unrealistic expectations:

  1. Be Careful with Your Expectations
  2. Remember Your Goal & Be Re-Empowered
  3. Stop Comparing Yourself to Others
  4. It’s Not Always About the Prize at the End
  5. Find Someone Else You Can Help

Hopefully these tips will be helpful to you when dealing with feeling discouraged & down on yourself.
