Mistakes Happen. Now What? - What to Do After You Make a Mistake

We all make mistakes! But we don't all know what to do after the mistake happens. We have trouble moving forward & not allowing the negative experience to take over our mind & cause us to fall into a pit of shame & feel defined by the mistake. Let's chat about what to do to move forward after making a mistake.

Show Notes:
Every single person in the world has made a mistake. And if they tell you they didn’t, they are straight-up lying to you. But I don’t think anyone could actually say that with a straight face, unless they are pushing the blame for their mistake onto someone else, but that’s a different problem.

Mistakes are something we all have to deal with, but some of us struggle more than others on how to recover & handle the situation. It can be overwhelming to deal with mistakes when you are a people pleaser or a perfectionist or just someone that allows shame to hang on you. And I am one of these people, so don’t worry if you are, too. Many of us are.

And something I talk about all the time is that mistakes are one of the greatest experiences for us to learn from because it forces the learning opportunity, rather than waiting for us to take it upon ourselves. And I know it’s rarely fun to learn something that way, but it is the most impactful. I think we can all agree to that deep down inside ourselves. Getting through these situations also demonstrates so much strength, too. So remember that next time you are hating your current experience. You are gonna be so much stronger for it.

Today I want to talk about what we can do after we make a mistake. The idea of my suggestions of what to do after the mistake occurs is to help you get past the experience itself & not dwell on what happened and what you did or didn’t do to contribute to the situation. Take the lesson you learned & move forward. It’s for your own good, your own health, your own sanity.

  1. So obviously the first suggestion will be the learn from it.
  2. Talk about it with those close to you to prevent falling into shame.
  3. Apologize & make amends with those necessary if someone was hurt by you.
  4. Take responsibility for what your part was.
  5. Figure out how you can do it better next.
  6. Forgive yourself.
  7. Know & believe that just because you made a mistake, it doesn’t mean YOU are a mistake & aren’t defined by it.
