Why Is It So Hard to be Yourself? - Being Who You Are Isn't Easy

Let's discuss why it's so hard to be ourselves & some thoughts to ponder on to get us in the mindset to be ourselves more & what baby steps we can take to get on that journey.

Show Notes:
I struggle with being my true self so much. It’s actually the reason I have dedicated myself to helping others be more authentic & vulnerable because I know it will help me & I would love it if any of my knowledge & research & discovery helps someone else, too.

But I have spent so much money on books to help me understand how to be more of myself. And I, even still, spend tons of time listening to sermons & podcasts & audio books & read blogs & try my hardest to just freaking understand what I’m supposed to do to be me.

Isn’t it interesting that we need other people’s advice to know how to be ourselves? We, for some reason, do not have the capacity to just look inside ourselves & know who we are. Oh wait, yes we do. We do have this capability, yet we don’t do it.

You know what we do? We look inside & think that what we see is wrong & that by some magic of following someone else’s advice, we will be able to figure out who we are because of what they say. We are looking at ourselves through their lens. Which, don’t get me wrong, it can be a really great lens that speaks so highly of us & tells us how amazing & awesome we are & that we are stronger than we think & believe & just need to tap into it. Because apparently it’s super easy.

But it’s not easy, as we all know. It’s easier for some, but still a tough task for most because by being yourself, your true self, you are exposing yourself to the world. A world that sometimes judges us & hates us & doesn’t like us or is willing to accept us. And these are big reasons to stay hidden & pretend to be what the world wants. Or be nothing at all. Just a shadow person not really doing anything.

But I’m not here to convince you that being yourself isn’t something you should do. We should all do it. I’m reading a book right now called, “How to Be Yourself” by Ellen Hendricksen because I long to be my true self. But I needed to call out the fact that it’s really really hard. Especially if you have spent a good portion of your life pretending to be someone else.

Unfortunately, I don’t have any real answers to offer you today on how to be yourself. I’m still trying to figure it out. But I do have 1 piece of advice for you: Start with being true to yourself with 1 thing every day. This means that if you have pretended to not like something, even though you really do like something, just admit it. Then keep building on this with what you like to do, how you want to live your life & so on. Because at least it’s a start.
