Rebecca Costa - Why Society Sometimes Needs to Collapse and How We Can Predict the Future

This week's guest, Rebecca Costa, is one of my new favorite people on the planet. She and I speak the same language (of the nerds), but don't worry. You'll surely find her as enlightening and entertaining as I did.

Rebecca was introduced to me by Dr. Jed Diamond, who recently featured some of my work in an article on his website and will be next week's guest on Slo Mo.

Rebecca Costa is an American sociobiologist, futurist, author, and host of the podcast, The Costa Report. She is the preeminent global expert on the subject of "fast adaptation" and brings both an evolutionary biologist and technologist's perspective to the subject of adaptation.

In other words, humanity is evolving in extremely bizarre ways due to a rapid rate of technological advancement. Nobody has made sense of what that means for our futures better than Rebecca. After retiring, she spent six years researching and writing the international bestseller The Watchman's Rattle: A Radical New Theory of Collapse. Her follow-up book titled On the Verge was introduced in 2017, also to critical acclaim.

You can't miss this one, so listen as we discuss:

  • How both Rebecca and I are both a bit East and a bit West (and fully nerds).
  • Why data is undoubtedly the best guide for decision-making and position-taking.
  • There are no facts about the future, only probabilities, but they're becoming more likely.
  • How we could have predicted the 2017 Las Vegas shooting and stopped it.
  • Why AI will not be self-serving because intelligent beings don't serve themselves.
  • "We have Paleolithic emotions, Medieval institutions, and Godlike technology."
  • Predictive technologies and why the weather report will soon be 100% accurate.
  • Humanity's model of decision making is not wrong. It's just slow.
  • We have data indicating that major disasters are coming, but we're not designed to care.
  • When society becomes too complicated, it adapts by collapsing as a reset mechanism.
  • You need food, shelter, water, love, and meaning. Science has proven this.
  • Her new podcast The Costa Report and how it aims to manipulate mainstream media.
  • By making knowledge accessible to all, humanity will make better decisions (for all).
