Hydrogen boilers: how much of a challenge?
Hydrogen could be flowing through gas pipes into homes in the future. If so, we’ll need boilers that can run on hydrogen to heat our homes, as well as hydrogen powered fuel cells or hydrogen powered thermally driven heat pumps. Hydrogen implications for gas network operators
Europe has built up one of the best gas distribution infrastructures in the world. There’s one problem though. It distributes natural gas, a fuel that we will hardly be able to use if we’re to reach our net zero targets. Can we use the infrastructure instead for clean hydrogen – either blended with natural gas as a stepping stone, or with pure hydrogen in the future? In this episode we put aside discussion on the extent to which we should do this – and focus on whether or not we can do this, and what’s involved in doing so. The role of policy and regulation in the energy transition
In this episode, we’re looking at the topic of regulation and the role it plays in the transition to new energy. Although many aspects of energy markets have been liberalised in many ways in many countries, energy is certainly not a completely free market. Regulation plays a critical role, both with competitive markets, and of course networks which are more heavily regulated as natural monopolies. Regulations – and the policies underpinning them – have, naturally, been built around ‘old energy’. It now needs to evolve and facilitate, even lead the transition to ‘new energy’. In the current crisis, balancing the electricity system has become more challenging. In some cases, we have seen high levels of renewable generation together with lower demand than normal, impacting both the local and national grids. Some markets have seen more frequent negative electricity prices or responded by procuring more ancillary services to support system balancing. Other markets, with less variable generation, have seen different challenges.
