The DFO Rundown
Previewing the final four & chatting with former Golden Knight Deryk Engelland!
The final four is underway in the Stanley Cup Playoffs and there are plenty of storylines in both of the series. Frank Seravalli and Jason Gregor talked about game one between the Lightning and Islanders before welcoming in former Golden Knight Deryk Engelland to help preview the Vegas/Montreal series! Before Deryk joined the pod, Jason and Frank took a look at some of the big-name free agents that will be hitting the market this summer. They also touched on a few trade targets before welcoming in the former NHL defenseman! With Engelland, they talked about his unique journey to the NHL and how he managed to carve out an impressive NHL career. They also talked about what he's doing now and how he's staying involved in hockey!
The Avalanche are done & we talk with Stanley Cup Champion Brian Engblom
Another episode of The DFO Rundown is here! Frank Seravalli and Jason Gregor kicked off this week's episode by talking about the Colorado Avalanche once again being eliminated in the second round. The two kicked around the idea of big changes coming to Colorado and talked about why they couldn't get back into their series against Vegas. After that, they were joined by former NHLer and Stanley Cup Champion Brian Engblom, who now works as an analyst on Tampa Bay Lightning broadcasts. Brian talked about his Cup rings, the Lightning heading into round three, and more before playing a quick round of rapid fire!
The Habs dominance, the NHL Draft, and more with Craig Button!
A new episode of The DFO Rundown is here! With Jason Gregor out of the lineup for today's pod, Frank Seravalli brought in Craig Button to fill in! The duo kicked things off by talking about the Montreal Canadiens surprising dominance of the Winnipeg Jets and how Head Coach Dominic Ducharme has had an impact. From there, they went on to talk about the Vegas Golden Knights coming back to even things up with the Avalanche before getting into the other two series from a thrilling second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs! Button gave some great insight into how the remaining teams in the playoffs are being coached and who needs to make the most adjustments to take their team to the next level. Of course, the next round is going to feature two matchups between teams that haven't played each other yet this season. Craig ranked the four divisions and talked about who could be favourites in round three. They transitioned from there and talked a little bit about the NHL Draft. Owen Power is coming off a fantastic performance at the World Hockey Championships. Was that enough for him to be locked in as the #1 overall pick? Craig shared his take and gave us his player comparables for the young defenseman. They also talked about what the Draft looks like after that.
The Scheifele Suspension & Trade Talk with Chris Johnston!
The NHL is churning out news and big stories seemingly non-stop right now so for today's episode of The DFO Rundown, we brought in some extra insider help! Sportsnet's Chris Johnston joined Jason Gregor and Frank Seravalli to talk about the summer ahead for the Maple Leafs and what kind of changes could be coming. They also touched on the Mark Scheifele suspension and played a little Buy/Sell with some big names on the trade market! Things are bad in Toronto and while the people in charge made it sound like some big changes might not happen, Chris thinks there's a chance that things could get wild. Who are those names? You'll have to listen in to find out. During Buy/Sell they touched on Cale Makar, the Leafs, the Oilers, Flames, Sabres, and Seth Joens! They wrapped up with a little bit more talk about the Blue Jackets and a fresh round of Rapid Fire!
An All-Canadian Game 7, MacKinnon's Magic, and a Chat With Brian Boucher
Happy Monday hockey fans! Jason Gregor and Frank Seravalli are back with a brand new episode of The DFO Rundown! Today, the guys got set for tonight's big game seven between the Leafs and Habs. They also got into the game seven that we saw on Friday night between Vegas and Minnesota, and the game one stomping that followed it on Sunday. They were also joined by former NHLer and current analyst Brian Boucher who talked about the magic of Nathan MacKinnon and other big stories from around the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Is this more of a choke job by the Maple Leafs or is this just the result of the Habs finding another level? How many games will Ryan Reaves get? Can the Canes overcome their game one loss against Tampa? Frank and Jason answered all of those questions before bringing in Boucher for some more analysis.
The Canes Culture Shift with Tripp Tracy
It's Friday and on the morning of what could be the only Game 7 in the first round of the Stanley Cup, Frank Seravalli and Jason Gregor are back for another episode of The DFO Rundown! The two talked about the teams that have advanced already and were joined by Hurricanes broadcaster Tripp Tracy, who talked about the Canes OT win, the culture changed that happened over the last five years, and their matchup against the Lightning.
Ep. 31: An Insane Sunday & A Chat With Allan Walsh
The first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs just continue getting more entertaining and more unpredictable. The Winnipeg Jets are in the drivers seat in their series against the Oilers, the Nashville Predators have climbed right back into their series against Carolina, and two of the last three Stanley Cup Champions have already been eliminated. Jason Gregor and Frank Seravalli recapped it all today on a brand new episode of The DFO Rundown. The episode also featured an appearance from NHL Agent Allan Walsh, which starts just before the 18-minute mark. Walsh talked about his career and how he went from working murder trials in Los Angeles to being one of the top agents in the NHL. We also talked about a few of his clients and put him through a round of Rapid Fire!
Frank's a Free Agent & the Playoffs Are Fire!
Episode 30 of The DFO Rundown is here! It was a busy week for our guy Frank Seravalli, who kicked off the podcast by giving us an update on his future and where he'd like to go now that his time at TSN has come to an end. From there, they went around the NHL and dug into each of the first-round series. The Panthers may have saved their season on Thursday night but they also might have a bit of a goaltending controversy on their hands. Speaking of goaltending controversies, there might be one brewing in Vegas and it won't just impact their playoff run. It will also make their choice at the expansion draft an interesting one. They wrapped up the playoff talk by looking at which deadline acquisition has had the biggest impact on their new club. They moved on to talk about some of the teams out of the playoffs and which organizations could make big changes, and which ones could give their current groups another chance. Vancouver and Calgary were the focus here. They wrapped up the episode with a little 'Buy/Sell, which focused on the playoffs, a few individual players, Nazem Kadri, and a trio of Canadian teams!
Overtimes Galore & a Chat With Dave Bolland
The playoffs are underway and they are not disappointing! Frank Seravalli and Jason Gregor got right into things by talking about the crazy number of overtime games to start things off and the red-hot rivalry between the Florida Panthers and Tampa Bay Lightning. Off the ice, there is plenty of drama as well. Frank got into what's going on with Kuznetsov, Samsonov, and the Capitals. Is there a real chance that Kuznetsov will be traded? Frank had the answer. The big-name that will be in the rumour mill of course is Jack Eichel, but, the surgery he wants to have a hot-button issue. Could that make him untradeable? The guys debated it. They wrapped up the opening segment by talking about the Vancouver Canucks offseason and what needs to happen. To further get into the Stanley Cup Playoffs spirit, the guys welcomed Dave Bolland into the Wood Jerseys studio! The two-time Stanley Cup Champion talked about winning it all with the Hawks, the crazy parties that come with it, and gave us his take on this year's postseason. Of course, we couldn't let him leave without running him through a quick round of 'Rapid Fire'.
Buckle Up, It's Playoff Time (Feat. John Scott)
Happy Friday! Of course, the final day of the work week also means there is a brand new episode of The DFO Rundown available for your listening pleasure. This week, Jason and Frank were joined by former NHL tough guy & current podcaster & engineer John Scott. The trio talked a little about life in the NHL, life after hockey, and previewed the Stanley Cup Playoffs! Before the chat with John, Frank went off on a rant about the lack of respect that the Presidents Trophy gets. They also got into the Vegas Golden Knights salary cap situation, which four seeds could through the first round, and they each gave their predictions for the East and West divisions before getting into a new edition of Buy/Sell! They welcomed John Scott into the WoodJersey.com Studio around the 26-minute mark and talked to the legendary enforcer about life after hockey, his fighting career, his relationship with Derek Boogard, and his favourite playoff matchups.
The Ultimate Roundtable: Playoff Edition with Ferraro & O'Dog
With all 16 playoff spots essentially locked up, we figured today was a good time to do our Ultimate Playoff Roundtable (pres. by Manscaped)! Frank and Jason were joined by Ray Ferraro and Jeff O'Neil to get set for the playoffs. Before bringing in the big guests, they got into the recent coaching news surrounding John Tortorella and Ron Brind' Amour. Frank talked about how the new deal between Rod and the Canes has likely been done for a while, but Brind'Amour is making sure everyone around him gets paid first. With O'Dog and Ferraro, they started by looking at the Central Division where the Hurricanes are looking like the favourites but the Lightning and Panthers are right behind them. They also touched on the likely first-round matchups in the Canadian Division. Can the Habs pull of an upset? It might come down to goaltending. Will McDavid continue his dominance in the postseason? That will likely decide the Oilers' fate.
A Wild Week & An Appearance From Stan Bowman
Happy Friday! The boys are back with a brand new episode of The DFO Rundown & you will not want to miss this one. Jason Gregor and Frank Seravalli start the podcast by going through everything that happened this week around the hockey world, almost all of it revolved around the New York Rangers. Then, they welcomed in Chicago Blackhawks GM Stan Bowman! Bowman was incredibly honest about his team's rebuild and how they'll utilize their cap space to become a contender once again. He also went into his relationship with Patrick Kane and how much the two of them have been through together. He also touched on his own career before playing a little 'Rapid Fire'.
The Lack of Playoff Races & What's next for Gerard Gallant?
We are back with another episode of The DFO Rundown with Jason Gregor & Frank Seravalli! This week on the pod, they talked about the lack of playoff races in the NHL before chatting with Gerard Gallant, who will be going to Latvia for the World Hockey Championships to coach Team Canada. Off the top, the guys started by going around the league and looking at the surprising lack of playoff races as we head down the stretch. Frank also touched on the Dallas Stars and their internal debate about whether or not to have their building at 100% capacity if they make the playoffs. From there, they hit on some potential playoff matchups and which teams aren't at 100% as they head into the postseason. Then at the 18:00 minute mark, they welcomed in Gerard Gallant. They started by talking about the process behind becoming the Head Coach of Team Canada for the World Hockey Championship. From there, they hit on some NHL coaching jobs that he was close on and what could be next for him in his career. They ended by talking about the current state of the NHL and a fun edition of Rapid Fire.
Quick, Call Noodles!
Episode 24 of The DFO Rundown is here! Our boy Frank Seravalli is under the weather today so we had to make a quick call to Jamie McLennan from TSN to join Jason Gregor today on the podcast! To kick off today's episode, the guys talked about the insane amount of games that Noodles has watched this season (hint: it's a lot). On that topic, they went around the league and looked at how some of the big trade deadline acquisitions are performing with their new teams. Of course, you can't have Noodles on and not talk a little bit about goaltending. Gregor got him to touch on the likes on Philip Grubauer, Mike Smith, and Freddy Andersen. We also got Noodles to take part in this week's edition of Buy/Sell that saw us touch on Ryan Miller, Spencer Knight, Kirill Kaprizov (again), the Flyers, and Connor McDavid's pursuit of 100.
Call Me Whatever You Want, I'm in the NHL (feat. Bob Beers)
Another episode of The DFO Rundown with Frank Seravalli and Jason Gregor is here! This week's episode features a great chat with former NHLer and current Bruins analyst Bob Beers, who talked about the Bruins recent play, his own career in the NHL, and having one of the best names in hockey history! Before the chat with Bob, Frank and Jason got into Sidney Crosby once again hitting up a point per game, some potential changes to the length of the season, playoff matchups, and more! How long can Crosby keep up an elite level? That was the first question we tackled this week on the pod. That led into a conversation about Patrick Marleau's games played record and how impressive it really is. There is also some talk that the NHL might expand the regular season to 84 games and that led the guys to a debate about if the league should consider changing up the playoff seeding system. They wrapped up the opening segment by looking at 'Kirill the Thrill' and the surging Minnesota Wild.
Catching up with Kekalainen
Another Friday is here and that means we have a fresh episode of The DFO Rundown! This week on the podcast, Jason Gregor and Frank Seravalli kicked things off by going around the NHL and talking about the current cross-checking issue, the juggernaut East Division, and the impact of home-ice advantage will be. They were also joined by Columbus Blue Jackets GM Jarmo Kekalainen. It's been a tough season for the Columbus Blue Jackets and last night goaltender Elvis MErzlikins spoke out about just how bad things have gotten. We started there with the NHL's first-ever European GM who talked about his teams struggles and the mental toll it has taken on the entire group. From there, they touched on Head Coach John Tortorella.
Talking Life & Mental Health with Chris Beaudry
It's a new week and that means a brand new episode of The DFO Rundown is here. To start things off, Jason welcomed Frank back to the pod after his brief vacation and you can tell just by looking at him, that he got some sun. From there, they got into the Canucks win over the Maple Leafs in their return to action, the new-look Boston Bruins, and Patrick Marleau getting set to break the NHL's all-time games played record. They then welcomed former Humboldt Broncos Assistant Coach Chris Beaudry to the podcast. Chris discussed his journey over the last couple of years, his mental health battles, how he copes, and how he's staying connected to hockey. He was very open with us and talked about some of his darkest, most difficult moments and how he's found a better place.
Turning the page on the deadline & talking about the draft with Chris Peters!
With the trade deadline in the rear-view mirror, we decided to turn our attention to the draft this week on The DFO Rundown! In a normal season, this is right around the time when the league's draft lottery would be happening and with a lot of teams already out of the playoff race, now seemed like a perfect time to take a peek at the next wave of NHL stars. To do that, who better to bring into the podcast than Chris Peters of HockeySense! Chris is now in his second decade of scouting NHL prospects but of course, with the pandemic, this season has been unlike any other. Chris talked to us about how much difficult it is to scout a player solely off video and also, lessons he's learned through his 10 plus years of watching prospects. From there, we got into some of the big names in this year's draft class like Owen Power, the two elite goalies in this year's class, and a name that already has scouts split. We also touched on Cole Caufield, who was recalled by the Montreal Canadiens today.
What did & didn't happen at the deadline
With today being the NHL Trade Deadline, we decided to wait until Monday night to drop episode 19 of the podcast! Even though today wasn't the craziest deadline in recent memory, there were still plenty of interesting stories for Frank and Gregor to get to. They started things off by going through some of the big moves we did see before digging into some trades that didn't happen, but were close. The big stunner today came after the deadline when the Capitals and Red Wings made a big swap while some of the more significant moves were made over the weekend or late last night. In terms of some moves that didn't happen, there's reason to believe that this summer will be a crazy one around the NHL. Today's episode of the pod also features another edition of 'Buy/Sell' brought to you by Jock MKT!
Drinking Out of a Fire Hose
We are now just days away from the NHL Trade Deadline which means Frank Seravalli and Jason Gregor had no shortage of things to talk about today on The DFO Rundown! The guys kicked things off by talking about the Florida Panthers, who could be in on two of the biggest names on the trade market, before going around the league and touching on almost every team that could be active ahead of the trade deadline. Of course, today's episode also features a fresh edition of 'Buy/Sell'! There is a three-horse race at the top of the Central Division and all three of the Hurricanes, Panthers, and Lightning could make moves before Monday's deadline. The Avalanche have a couple of areas that they will be looking to upgrade. Mike Hoffman could be on the move. The Blackhawks could be a fascinating team to watch according to Frank, who also thinks that the Jets are in a must-buy situation. There is a lot going on around the NHL and in today's 45-minute episode, Frank and Jason tell you everything you need to know!
