Unpacking Africa
Unpacking Africa

Dr. Palesa Phalafala is a plastic and reconstructive surgery registrar at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital (the largest in Africa and 3rd largest in the world!). She shares anecdotal insights on her day-to-day, the amazing work, resolve and sacrifice each health professional goes through in taking care of us in their communities but also having to social distance from their family during this insidious pandemic. She highlights SHEROES, of which she is one, and the work they do with CoronAssist.Online and reiterates the importance for all of us to stay home and individually own the fight by practicing better hygiene and social distancing.

Episode 2 - April 2020, with extended partial or full lockdowns across almost every nation on the globe, this episode hones in on the health professionals from Zimbabwe and South Africa and gives the opportunity to all of us practicing social distancing to have some agency.

Healthcare ecosystem challenges have been spotlighted more during the pandemic and by peeling the layers we recognize the oft-overdue needed investment in infrastructure, sustainable technology for personalized and tech-enabled diagnostics and medicine delivery and on the practitioner side the work hours, stress, and inadequacy of many a healthcare institute in serving citizens across Global North and Global South, our African, countries.
