What Really Matters: Everyday Spirituality

Ep. 64 How to Face Your Fear of Death

In this episode I talk about the fact that accepting our mortality is one of the keys to spiritual growth because we need to get beyond ego, which fears death above all else. In fact I always remind myself and you at the end of each episode to "face your fear" and today I'll share some practical ideas about how to confront your own fear of death and work toward acceptance. To work on your fear try these 6 practices:

  1. Think about death daily. Read my book The Tao of Death. https://amzn.to/3zEBLzU
  2. Journal about death, your fears and past experiences.
  3. Read about death. Join A Year of Reading Dangerously. https://www.amazon.com/shop/spiritualmd
  4. Talk about death. Visit a Death Cafe or get The Conversation Project Starter Kit.
  5. Learn about death. Take a class in your community or online. Listen to podcasts like ENd-of-Life University.
  6. Work with death. Volunteer at a nursing home or hospice. Or train to become an end-of-life doula.
