Nobody wants to work for a helicopter manager. Then again, if you’ve ever worked as a manager, you’ve probably dealt with employees who don’t know what they’re doing–at least at first. The secret is to provide guidance thoughtfully and then check for understanding. Remind yourself what it was like to be in the newbie’s spot–both in the need for guidance and the need for autonomy. Be deliberate in your leadership in order to build a solid, competent team.
