Openbaring voor iedereen: God dienen op je eigen manier in Thyatyre
We leven in een tijd waarin de mens in het middelpunt staat, ook de godsdienstige mens. Alles moet om ons draaien. We dienen God op onze eigen manier. De Heere moet maar tevreden zijn, zolang we het voor Jezus doen. En een goed gevoel hebben over God in ons hart. Dit is een vorm van zelfmisleiding die al eeuwen oud is. Al in de tijd van koning Achab, ongeveer 800 jaar voor Christus, was het voor veel gelovigen normaal geworden om God te dienen volgens hun eigen regels. De Bijbel werd genegeerd, want dit gold toch niet meer. God moest maar tevreden zijn met de aandacht die mensen dan wel voor Hem overhadden. In Thyatire dachten sommigen dat je op die manier Christen kon zijn. De Heere Jezus zelf helpt hen uit de droom. Deze houding heeft in de Nieuwtestamentische Kerk geen plaats. Openbaring voor iedereen: Smyrna heeft de toekomst
In deze aflevering staan we stil bij de zeven hoofdzonden en de vier laatste dingen. De kerk kent al eeuwenlang zeven categorieën zonden die ons helpen om te herkennen waar we afwijken van Gods bedoeling. Church in Ruins: penance and covenant as way forward
After the celebration of God's Word in Nehemiah 9, the Israelites realize that change is required. For this to happen, it a church will have to genuinely agree with God. In today's terms, they have to really believe the Bible and the traditional teachings of the Church. If they do, then they will be truly sorry if and when they did not meet these standards. Today we will contemplate the necessity of confessing your sins. For lasting change it is not only important to admit your wrongdoing and being sorry about it. You will also need a firm commitment to God's values. The Bible calls this a covenant, a commitment to God that you will serve him and follow his standards. People who try to diminish the role of alcohol in their lives know how important it is to consider whether they will have a drink at a social occasion in advance. If you weigh the benefits and decide not to, you are much more likely to stick to it. If you wait with deciding until the drink is actually offered to you, chances are that you will drink anyway. In this episode you will find out how the emotive and cognitive therapy of penance and covenanting will help you forward.

Gesprek met Jan Pit (Dutch)
Op 20 augustus 1987 had ik als jong journalist een gesprek met de zendeling Jan Pit (1941-2008). Hij was in die tijd vooral bekend als spreker voor Kruistochten/ Open Doors, maar had aanvankelijk als zendeling in Laos gewerkt. Dit interview gaat over zijn leven, roeping en de uitdagingen van de zending en christenen in vervolgde landen. Op een beschrijvende manier vertelt Jan hoe hij levende kevers en andere insekten at om het evangelie te verkondigen. Dit en meer in een bemoedigend gesprek met Jan Pit. Het mag een klein wonder heten dat de bandopname hiervan na 32 jaar bewaard is gebleven. Vandaag heb ik heb gedigitaliseerd, zodat u als luisteraar van Bible Time er van kunt meegenieten. Jan Pit was een inspirerend man. Hij woonde in Europa, Azië en Afrika. Hij zag scherp hoe landen en christenen opgeoffered werden aan internationale politieke en economische agenda's. Zijn toespraak over Daniel en de principes van goddeloze indoctrinatie en revolutie machten zal ik nooit vergeten.

Why do neoliberals silence other viewpoints?
Why is it that the postmodern liberals are unable to tolerate other points of view? We used to have liberal enquiry. We could agree to disagree, because the truth remains the same. Those days are well and truly over. Most churches and seminaries are being run by thought police. Yes also many churches. If you consider women's ordination invalid, you are not likely to be even allowed into the job in many denominations. Or find that so called colleagues are willing to rob you of your livelyhood. The same applies if you take the Church's teachings on divorce seriously. Only as short while ago, marrying a divorced person, implied excommunication for the term of one's natural life, if you were not sorry, that is. And at least twenty or thirty years of penance if you were. These things have changed. Not that long ago the Archbishop of Canterbury married a divorced film actress (with her husband still very much alive) to one of the members of the royal family. This episode of Bible Time takes you to the world of the New Testament. You will meet with a king and his divorcee wife who create their own truth and seek to silence everyone who disagrees. Church in ruins: anticipate further opposition
When you are rebuilding the church in a destructive spiritual climate you should prepare for the long haul and focus. The agents of destruction will not be happy with your attempts. They will scheme to harm you or your good name. They will try to distract you. They will hire theologians to discourage and intimidate you. All these things happened to Nehemiah. So, do not be discouraged, but: Anticipate further opposition. Don’t be distracted. Never meet on the enemy’s terms. Also: Expect them to hire theologians. This is particularly sad. In recent church history, theologians have often been used as agents of change. Nehemiah shows us that this is not a new phenomenon. Those who prefer a church in ruins often hire prophets to do their bidding. These men and women will tell you that what God intends is actually very different from what you find in Scripture and tradition.

Church in ruins: justice, focus and service
A church in ruins, usually implies severe economic problems. More often than not, this includes preying people who exploit the weak and vulnerable as they carve out a career for themselves. Justice and the Law of God should apply equitably. Nehemiah is willing to confront the rich and powerful who violate the rules of Scripture with their capitalist values. He actually forces them to give back money they acquired by means of usury, as well as lands, vineyards and olivegroves. True repentance, penitent actions not mere words! They also agree to do the right thing in the future. One of the reasons why this worked, was Nehemiah's personal example. Out of reverence for God, he did not dare live in luxury while many of his fellow Jews struggled to survive. Instead of accumulating wealth and setting up successful agricultural businesses for himself, he and his man devoted themselves to rebuilding the wall. In this way, Jerusalem becamea safe place again, protected from unscrupulous men on the inside and from declared enemies on the outside.

Church in ruins: expect opposition
As you have mourned, identified and started repairing while others are doing nothing; expect opposition! There is a reason why the Church is in ruins presently. A lot of people are perfectly happy with the current state as they benefit from it. They consider the Law of God and His idea of worship a major imposition if not a threat for their kingdoms and way of life. They prefer to be in control themselves and call it religion. This need not cause any anxiety on your part as you pursue a wholesome Church. Just be aware that your attemtps will probably not be welcomed by those who are in control of the region right now. Nehemiah's approach was sensible and spiritual: "We prayed to our God and posted a guard." As you uncover new filth, for sections of the wall the rubble may appear so much that restoration is practically impossible. You may have to rebuild from scratch. Uncover the plots of the enemy, don't keep silent about it, but show them for what they are. Then, take it one stone at a time.
