On December 3rd, 1984 the song "Do They Know It’s Christmas" was released. Recorded by the cream of the British pop world under the name Band Aid it went on to sell over three million copies in the UK, becoming the best selling record ever, and raised over 28 million dollars worldwide for famine relief in Ethiopia. The song was also a major success around the world, reaching number one in thirteen other countries outside the UK. In the US, the single fell short of the top ten in the Billboard Hot 100 but sold an estimated 2.5 million copies by January 1985.
We’ll get to the story behind the song from its inception right through to its completion, the b-side and 1985 "One Year On" version of the song. Along the way we’ll hear clips from a 1984 video titled "Do They Know It’s Christmas - The Story of the Official Band Aid".
