Lore and Legend : Tales From Our Mythic Past

Carys Nant Carfan · With Tamar Williams

Today we’re talking to storyteller Tamar Williams, who tells the tale of Carys Nant Carfan. Tamar is a bilingual storyteller, telling stories in Welsh and English.  She grew up hearing the myths and legends told of in Mabinogion, but only much later was she introduced to the world of storytelling as a contemporary performance art form. In 2013 she won the National Storyteller of the Year competition, launching her into a career as a storyteller.  Our conversation explored Tamar’s own journey from theatre and acting into the world of professional storytelling, how the stories she tells have changed and evolved, and the emerging sense of purpose in her role as a storyteller. We also talk about how her work confronts the representation of women in myth and folk stories, and how storytellers can best address the problems that are throw up for modern tellers and audiences in our use of traditional material.

You can find out more about Tamar's storytelling on her website at https://www.tamarelunedwilliams.com/.

You can also hear more stories from her on th Pathways / Llwybrau story walk project online here: https://www.pathways-llwybrau.com/.
