Episode 3 – Mar. 6, 2018 PDAC 2018 Edition
Guest: Dr. Rolf Fandrich, CSIRO Reflexivity Group
From the CSIRO stand at PDAC 2018 Convention South Tradeshow floor in Toronto, Dr Fandrich shares CSIRO´s approach to innovation and the CSIRO Trust Model that characterizes the relationship between a community and the mining operation they live alongside. Using community surveys, the Reflexivity Group can deliver the top 5 things most important to a community and hence significantly improve understanding between company and community.
Dr. Fandrich also tells us about their experience of ON, CSIRO’s (Australia´s national research provider) science and technology accelerator ( http://oninnovation.com.au ) and the Lean Launch Program, a tool to help researchers turn their discoveries into sustainable products and services that solve real world problems.
CSIRO´s Reflexivity Group developed a data service, called Reflexivity to provide community members with a way to be heard by the resource companies that work alongside them. It also helps companies understand what their communities think about them and why, providing tangible opportunities for building greater trust in those relationships.
Innovation: CSR
“CSIRO has developed a way to give communities a direct voice into companies that operate alongside them. Our approach enables a dynamic interaction between company and community that aims to increase understanding on all sides, build trust, and strengthen relationships. It builds upon knowledge gained from tens of thousands of community interactions in 9 countries and associated research over the past decade.
In 2017, Rio Tinto Iron Ore engaged CSIRO for a three-year project to apply the Reflexivity approach with communities in the Pilbara region in North Western Australia. The project is called Local Voices. Local Voices will provide the communities neighbouring Rio Tinto’s operations in the Pilbara a direct voice inside the company, and help the company engage with the issues that matter most to these communities”.
