Comparing KDE and Gnome: KDE: Think “Super-powered Windows 7” - also, insanely customizable, but still feels kinda “old” to use - like you’d expect from a “super powered Windows 7”. Also feels “heavier”, despite the fact that it is just the opposite. By default more flat and angular. Gnome: Think “Parallel Universe macOS” - a lot less customizable (though still a bit more customizable than Windows or Mac), but very sleek and modern, and behaves like a thoroughly modern OS - like you’d expect from a “parallel universe macOS”.
