Those who experience both parental incarceration and juvenile justice involvement as children were nearly three times more likely to have depression or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) compared to peers without any experience with the criminal justice system, according to a study published in JAMA Network Open. Lurie Children's hospital of Chicago. We discussed how the idea for this study originated, the importance of physicians recognizing the scope and impact of parental incarceration and juvenile justice involvement, and what changes she would like to see in the support networks available to these children and young adults.
