New Delhi, India – India's Central Vista Redevelopment Project is set to unveil a new parliament building on May 28, 2023. This state-of-the-art structure will serve as the seat of the Parliament of India, replacing the existing Parliament House located in New Delhi. Construction work for the new parliament building commenced on December 10, 2020, with a total expenditure of ₹862 crore (approximately US$110 million).

The new parliament building stands as a testament to India's commitment to modernization and infrastructure development. It encompasses four floors and an expansive ground area covering 65,000 square meters. Notably, it has a seating capacity of 1,272 individuals, with the Lok Sabha chamber accommodating 888 members and the Rajya Sabha chamber accommodating 384 members. This provision for increased seating capacity is a forward-looking approach in preparation for future Lok Sabha expansions, as the upcoming elections in 2026 are expected to necessitate more seats.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) expresses pride in this significant milestone, viewing it as a proud moment for all Indians. However, other prominent political parties, including the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), the Trinamool Congress (TMC), and the Indian National Congress (INC), have chosen to boycott the inauguration ceremony. Their argument is centered around the ceremonial inauguration, asserting that it should be conducted by the President of India rather than the Prime Minister, to uphold the highest level of protocol and formality.

The new parliament building symbolizes India's dedication to progress, functionality, and foresight. Its upcoming inauguration will mark an important chapter in India's democratic journey. Its increased seating capacity, reflects India's commitment to democratic expansion and reinforces the nation's aspiration for inclusive growth and development.
