In this episode, Eric Martel discusses the recent collapse of Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) and its implications for the entire banking system. He asks critical questions about the security and stability of the banking system and what it means for people's financial security. Eric explains how banks operate through fractional reserve banking and how the reserve requirement was reduced to 0% during the pandemic to stimulate the economy. He highlights the risks of over-lending and over-investing and how it can lead to a bank run. Eric also explains how SVB made a massive bet by investing roughly $100 billion in government-backed bonds with a significant portion of that locked away for three to four years, assuming that the Federal Reserve would not raise interest rates as fast as they did and that inflation would not go up as high and as quickly. Eric also discusses the dramatic effect of high inflation and high interest rates on the economy, causing lower revenues for many companies, especially high tech companies. Many of these companies found themselves in a tough spot, and some of them were banking at SVB, which caused the bank to need some cash quickly. SVB decided to sell 21B of their underperforming bonds, which ended up costing them 1.8 Billion dollars. Eric concludes by urging people to consider what this event means for their financial security and what they could do to make sure they are best protected.
