Guilt has an incredible way of popping up even when we’re barely doing anything "wrong" at all.  Most of us learn guilt throughout normal childhood development.  Guilt alerts us when we’ve stepped outside of the boundaries of our core  values. It makes us take responsibility when we’ve done something wrong  and helps us to develop a greater sense of self-awareness.    The feeling of guilt forces us to examine how our behaviour affects  others and make changes so that we don’t make the same mistake again. Shame is among the most “use-less” of human emotions, with the power to convince us that that little voice in our head is right after all—you know, the one that says “You’re not good enough,” or “You’ll never really belong,” or “Who would actually love you?” It’s not only an excruciatingly painful feeling, but also a universal one. Rich or poor, overweight or fit, successful or barely making eds meet, we all experience shame from time to time, whether we admit it or not (and we usually don’t). Shame can force us to alienate ourselves and seek refuge in unhealthy manners such as or addiction, violence, aggression, depression, eating disorders and bullying. Life isn’t perfect. Things go wrong, mistakes are made, accidents and unforeseen circumstances happen, and at times our hopes get shattered. Through all of life's experiences and the challenges we each face; is your default reaction to find somebody or something else to blame? A lot of things that happen to us are the result of multiple contributing factors, and can be caused by a mix of our own actions as well as those of other people. Life is not a spectator sport and our interaction in it is what causes the experiences we have. If you find yourself trying to pass the buck for every mistake you make, then it’s probably gotten you into trouble in the past… …especially if you try to shift the blame onto your partner, family, best friends, or people you have to work closely with. Life is all about making mistakes. Because it’s when we go through and moving past the mistakes that we learn how to do things right, isn't it? The “New Normal” as so many are calling it, with near post-apocalyptic emotions attached and the promise of a new world with a new way of doing things. It almost elicits the same emotions as an abusive husband who promises his estranged spouse that “this time things will be different” and “I have changed, I promise”. Yet when we look back at history and the catastrophes that have befallen humankind, with the majority of these calamities being of our own making, have we truly entered a “New Normal” or is it merely the shock of yet another close-call that has jarred us from our behavioural and unconscious reverie? So, before we delve into empty promises of “we solemnly swear”, let's look at a few behavioural facts that has brought us to our current global dilemma and what needs to change in order to minimalise any similar future scenarios that threaten to mimic our current assimilated experience. The question we should all be asking is: "Is the 'new normal' a place of creation or is it a place of incarceration?" The choice remains in all of our hands.
