Calandrian Simpson-Kemp founded Village of Mothers, a support group for grieving mothers after her 20-year-old son was shot and killed in Houston in 2013. She's a vocal advocate for the gun prevention movement. Shannon Watts started Moms Demand Action, a national movement with millions of supporters and local chapters in all 50 states. which started in response to the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary shooting. Jenna Bush Hager is a co-host of NBC’s TODAY with Hoda & Jenna and an editor-at-large for Southern Living magazine. She is the author of The New York Times bestseller Ana’s Story: A Journey of Hope, which she wrote after traveling to Latin America in 2006 as an intern with UNICEF. Hager remains involved with UNICEF and is currently the chair of its Next Generation initiative, which is dedicated to reducing childhood deaths around the world. The Mamas speak to Jenna about motherhood, raising her children and her experience in the spotlight as the daughter of a former U.S. president.

We are joined this week by a Texas legend! Known as “America’s most popular populist,” Jim Hightower is a national radio commentator, writer, public speaker, and New York Times best-selling author. Hightower frequently appears on television and radio programs, bringing a hard-hitting populist viewpoint into the mass media. In addition, he works closely with the alternative media, and in all of his work he keeps his ever-ready Texas humor up front, practicing the credo of an old Yugoslavian proverb: “You can fight the gods and still have fun.”

Our delightful guest this week is Stephanie Wang-Breal, an award-winning filmmaker, commercial director and co-founder of the independent production company, Once in a Blue Films. Blowin' Up, her third feature-length film, had its World Premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival in April 2018 and was awarded the Best Documentary Feature award at the San Diego Asian Film Festival and the Society of Authors Award at the Film Des Femmes in Paris, France. She currently resides in Brooklyn, New York with her son & daughter.

Her first book The Opposite of Hate: A Field Guide to Repairing Our Humanity was published in April 2018. She often speaks as a keynote speaker at conferences about political division, hate, otherizing, diversity and identity and how we can solve the deep problems of our past and present.

This week we are joined by a special guest, Aimee Allison, the founder and president of She the People, a national network elevating the voice and power of women of color. She brings together voters, organizers, and elected leaders in a movement grounded in values of love, justice, belonging, and democracy.

We are joined this week by special guest Raj Patel, an award-winning author, filmmaker and professor at the LBJ Public Policy School at the University of Texas at Austin. He's written numerous best-sellers such as Stuffed and Starved: The Hidden Battle for the World Food System and The Value of Nothing: How to Reshape Market Society and Redefine Democracy. And his upcoming book is called Inflamed: Deep Medicine and the Anatomy of Injustice. In this episode, Raj describes how food is part of the justice work we do and how we build a better world for our kids. No stranger to the state: Beto O'Rourke represented the 16th house congressional district based out of El Paso, Texas. He came into the limelight when running for the U.S. Senate, and more recently, ran for the presidency. We ask O'Rourke about the mother role in his life, January's insurrection and his political future in the state.

Joining us this week is engineer and inventor Saul Griffith. He's the founder and Chief Scientist at Otherlab, an independent R&D lab, and helps government agencies and Fortune 500 companies understand energy infrastructure and deep decarbonization. Griffith has been a principal investigator and project lead on federally funded research projects for agencies like NASA, and defense advance research projects agency, also known as DARPA, and has also started numerous tech companies acquired by the likes of Google and Autodesk. He was awarded the MacArthur Genius Award and is the founder the Rewiring America.

We have a very special guest this week: powerhouse and Harvard-trained lawyer Wendy Davis. Not only has she run for governor of Texas, she also founded a nonprofit Deeds Not Words and most recently run for a congressional seat 21 in Texas. We discuss the importance of the mother role in her life, her outlook for the Texas and [new] presidential administrations and her ongoing efforts for women's rights and childcare.
