The Two Gay Geeks đŸłïžâ€đŸŒˆ have a chat with Helen Stephenson, who is the Founder and Director of the Prescott Film Festival taking place September 27th through October 2nd. Helen is also the Director of the Film Program at Yavapai Community College and has also made several films herself. We chat about how the film festival came to be, and we get a little nostalgic about the time we went up for the mini sci-fi film festival they had a few years ago. More information is below on the festival. Please have a listen, and we hope you enjoy this as much as we did.

About Helen Stephenson

Helen Stephenson is the Founder and Director of the Prescott Film Festival. She started researching how to create a festival in 2008, and it was a volunteer job for her and her amazingly supportive husband/co-founder Don for over 10 years. Well over 100 people have volunteered for the festival over the years, and it is headed into its 12th event this fall. It is now part of Yavapai College.

Helen has a bachelor’s degree in Radio/TV from Cal State Long Beach and a Masters in American Media and Popular Culture from ASU. She has been with Yavapai College since 2013 and is the Director of the Film and Media Arts Program there. Mentoring young filmmakers on how to tell a compelling story is the best part of her job! She volunteered to write for a range of publications in the community over the years; a column called Scholarship Toolkit, arts and culture articles for Pop Rocket and 5enses Magazine. She won an Emmy (Educational, Rocky Mountain Chapter) in 2018 for Campus Safety During an Alien Invasion. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OpVyrdzPalc In 2019 she wrote, produced, and directed the Yavapai College 50th Anniversary Video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hfDAnpd5A7o She has a total of six daughters and stepdaughters, two of whom live in Prescott and one attending NAU getting a degree in Astro Physics. She was a Girl Scout Leader/Co-Leader for 12 years and currently serves on the board of Prescott Area Leadership as Vice President.
